Is it your life you are living?
Leadership is a choice, we can all choose to take leadership!
This is an important base of the Being on Mission method.
It does not matter if you are a manager or like to become one, an entrepreneur or an (independent) professional. You are welcome to discover how you can lead your life and take others along in it, by exploring how the 10 principles of leadership and life work for you.
So why not people with a mental handicap? Everybody, including you, recognizes situations in which others decide for you what is important or what you need to do. If you have a mental handicap the interference of others seems to be even stronger. Think about your manager telling you how to do your job, your partner who tells you what is important for you or a mentor who patronizes you. They all mean it well, but come on it is your life not theirs!
Rico, a young men with a light mental handicap, works behind the bar at the stable where I work with horses. He also has a job at LFB, an organization run by and for people with a handicap that stand up for the interests of people with a mental handicap. They organize presentations and work-shops for companies, schools and municipalities. Together we came up with the idea to organize a workshop personal leadership for the visitors of their monthly Knowledgecafé.
The preparation with the team, people with a mental handicap and coaches, felt like a party already. Beautiful stories of go-getters who persist to make the most out of life, although it might be more complicated and less self-evident to do so and they need more help from others now and then.
Since the visitors have different levels of mental handicaps our challenge was to make it language wise as simple as possible. “Personal leadership” was to hard to understand, so the team came up with “I live my own life”. They made a flyer with teasing questions like “Do you lead your own life already?” and “ What do you want to make important in your life?”
To let the participants experience the “wow” feeling of what can be possible we started with Rico telling his story. He deeply wanted to get his scooter driver license and wasn’t able to realize that all by himself. Since he was so clear in not giving up others started to help him and he realized it during a TV program that makes the impossible possible for special persons.
After Rico his story the participants broke up in pairs to talk about 2 questions:
What makes you happy? 🙂 & What are you good at?
Chaff, a colleague of Rico, told me in front of the group how music makes her happy, she loves to sing and comes from a musical family. She does not know how to find the time and opportunity to sing at this moment, but was very clear in the desire to get more music into her life. This was an example to start working on the third question.
What do you want MORE of in your life? + And “How?”
After a smashing performance of Rico, who loves to perform, singing the song “I live my life”, the participants works on de “More of? And “How?” question in pairs again.
To close of the evening I invited some participants to tell their story to me in front of the group. During the sharing the audience started to help already with ideas and suggestions. This is how it works. First you discover by yourself what is important for you, then you start telling this to others in a clear way and they will star helping you. That is what leadership on your own life means in the most pure and simple form.
