How to become an even better leader than you are already?
Leadership is a choice, not a formal position. Anyone who takes more control in their work and life is a leader. Are you a leader? Do you recognize that there is a lot to do to be successful as a leader?
Being authentic, which means staying by yourself…and being able to switch to different behavioral styles depending on the situation (see previous blog).
Showing empathy, to let the other person feel understood.
And being able to tell a clear story yourself, storytelling, to your employees, manager, peers, customers and stakeholders.
O yeah, that story normally is about vision, help what was meant with vision? Where you like to go, who you want to be as a human being, team or organization? The ultimate end goal, preferably with some ambition in it since the world around us changes constantly.
We believe that values, what matters most, are the fundament for a good vision. So you have to something with values as well. So for a start get these values to the surface, what matters most for each of us.
A long list of keywords is the result, let’s try to understand what each of us exactly means by them, how does it look like and how does it feel when you live this value. And then select some common values.
These need to be aligned with the company values of the headquarter, to avoid problems later on.
Sounds logical so far? Ok, let’s do it! Let’s go for a vision based on shared values. By doing this together you will get more commitment. Well, how do you do that in an effective way and do you get the right people together for it? And are you able to facilitate the process by yourself?
Wow it takes some effort to come to this. A value-based vision and a good story. Are you done then or does just another phase start?
Now you know where you want to go it’s time to determine a strategy and set goals, naturally involve others again preferably.
Are we there now? No, without a concrete action plan, add together, lots of discipline and execution power to achieve the goals the chance for success is as high as winning the main prize in the lottery with just one lot.
Yes, finally we can start. We have a clear story, everyone understands it and is familiar with their personal tasks in it. This means change, small or big. Starting to do things in a different way is not always obvious for all of us, and besides from that it can acquire some personal development of the involved professionals. This means more and better coaching to strengthen and improve the skills of your employees. Coaching, wasn’t that 1 on 1 time without fixing the problem for the other person but instead asking questions to let the other discover the solution by itself? Help, that will, take a while where do I find the time?
Especially since some problems, or do you prefer to call it challenges, arise along the road. You also need to address them to a team and facilitate the process to look at them from different perspectives to find a suitable solution together, make a paradigm shift together. Well it’s done for now, time to re-energize during the weekend.
